The South West Public Health Observatory is part of a national network of eight regional public health observatories, funded by the Department of Health. These were established in 2000 as outlined in the Government White Paper
Saving Lives: Our Healthier Nation
. Key tasks include: monitoring health and disease trends; identifying gaps in health information; advising on methods for health and health impact assessment; drawing together information from different sources and carrying out projects on particular health issues.
The South West Public Health Observatory also forms a key part of the developing South West Observatory. This is a wider regional intelligence function, currently supported by the Department of Health, Government Office for the South West, the South West of England Regional Development Agency, the Regional Assembly and the Environment Agency.
