Notes

If you are not familiar with the contents of the Compendium you will be amazed at the variety of ways of presenting data. Remember to use the excellent notes page for descriptors and issues for each set of indicators. Read the descriptors carefully, particularly for base year(s), method of standardisation and age-groups

Inequalities

The only data available on deprivation in this version is IMD 2000 at Local Authority, Health Authority(!) and PCG(!) levels. You may wish to use the PCT indicators at http://www.swpho.org.uk/pctdata/index.htm

As you probably know Townsend and Jarman cannot be calculated from 2001 Census data. To compare your area with similar ones look at the

This is an analysis of 42 Census variables, Look under Corresponding LAs to find your closest matches, and Maps to see what the patterns look like. Cluster Summaries show the characteristics of the groups

2001 Census data
Not included in this version. NCHOD hope to have it in the next version You will find it at Neighbourhood Statistics

Population

All rates have been recalculated using 2001 Census-based populations, so will probably not be comparable with that from previous Compendia.

The generic population indicators contain revised population estimates from 1991-2001 including PCTs from 1998, and also resident and GP registered populations for PCTs 2001

Effects of re-coding mortality data from ICD-9 to ICD-10
Pooled mortality data is calculated from 1999 and 2001, not on three years data as in previous versions

The issues and conversion factors for presenting mortality trends following the conversion are well discussed in the notes

Risk factors

The Health Survey for England report, published in 2000 based on data from 1996-98 seems to be the most recent lifestyle data. I have added HSE to the file name, and the file suffix is _00, so you won’t be disappointed when you see the name and think there is a new source of information

Cancer Incidence

Because PCT populations are only available from 1998 the PCT pooled incidence is based on 1998-2000 data, whereas other areas are based on 1997-2000 data. They are presented on separate sheets
