		Inequalities and health in the South West Region August 1999

A report compiled for Dr Gabriel Scally, Regional Director of Public Health, by Dr Cameron Bowie, Consultant in Public Health Medicine and Ms Helen Onions, Research Analyst.

This report:

• is addressed in particular to policy makers in the South West Region

• illustrates where poverty and ill health coincide

• describes the link between social exclusion and premature death 

• offers local statistics in tables, graphs and maps to illustrate the assertion that social determinants can have a profound effect on health. 

The purpose of the report is to proffer the evidence needed to persuade regional policy makers that their decisions can have a profound effect on the health of communities in the South West region.
